Joint Injections.
Joint and soft tissue injections are used to help relieve inflammation and swelling, and to make movement easier, in painful, swollen and inflamed joints. Joint and soft tissue injections work by minimising the body’s reaction to inflammation. When inflammation is reduced, pain also reduces.
Joint and soft tissue injections are administered directly in to the inflamed area; this is called an intra-articular injection. A high concentration of steroid can be administered with minimal side effects.
Treatment.
Discomfort usually improves and resolves within a few days and the benefits can be temporary (lasting for several months) or permanent. Injections can take up to 4 weeks to be completely effective.
The joints most often injected are the shoulder, elbow, knee, hand, wrist or hip.
Joint and soft tissue injections must be combined with appropriate rehabilitation to gain the best results.
Joint and soft tissue injections are administered by our specialist injection physiotherapist. Once consent is given, the skin surface is thoroughly cleaned, the joint is entered with a needle attached to a syringe and the steroid is injected into the joint space.
To achieve an overall improvement in treatment outcome, the appointment will also include education, advice and an appropriate post-treatment plan to further support recovery.
