Joint Injections.
Joint and soft tissue injections are used to help relieve inflammation and swelling, and to make movement easier, in painful joints.
These intra-articular injections are delivered directy into a joint space (e.g the knee or hip) to treat pain and they work by minimising the body’s reaction to inflammation. A high concentration of steroid can be administered with minimal side effects.
Treatment.
All joint and soft tissue injections are administered by our advanced practitioner and chartered physiotherapist, Simran, and all treatments are carried out at our Odiham clinic, RG29 1DU. Simran trained at the University of Essex and gained a Level 7 qualification in Joint and Soft Tissue Injection Therapy.
The joints most often injected are the shoulder, knee, elbow, wrist and hip.
Following a thorough assessment, and providing an injection is clinically appropriate, consent must be given for the treatment. Once consent is received, the skin surface is thoroughly cleaned, the joint is entered with a needle attached to a syringe and the steroid is injected into the joint space. Any discomfort usually improves and resolves within a few days.
Joint and soft tissue injection treatments can take up to 4 weeks to be completely effective. The benefits of an injection can be temporary (lasting for several months) or permanent, and must be combined with an appropriate rehabilitation programme to achieve the best outcome.
Each appointment will include education, advice and an appropriate post-treatment plan to further support recovery.
